This enigmatic portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925, a year before the artist married the sitter, Christian Grace Reid. It predates his spectacular fall from grace just a year later, when his painting “The Breakdown” was removed from the Royal Academy after just 9 days on display.
